EBUCore Metadata Standard
The European Broadcasting Union's metadata specification for audiovisual content
EBUCore (Tech 3293) is the flagship metadata specification developed by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) for describing audio, video and multimedia resources. Designed as a minimum yet flexible attribute set, it serves archives, content exchange, production workflows and semantic web applications across the broadcasting industry.
Combined with the EBU Class Conceptual Data Model (CCDM), EBUCore provides a comprehensive framework for descriptive and technical metadata in service-oriented architectures and linked data developments. It has been adopted internationally and integrated with standards like MXF, ADM (Audio Definition Model) and NewsML-G2.
What is EBUCore?
EBUCore is a metadata specification maintained by the EBU Technical & Innovation department, published as Tech 3293. It defines a structured vocabulary for describing audiovisual resources with sufficient detail for broadcast operations while remaining adaptable to diverse use cases.
The specification is designed around key principles that address the operational needs of broadcasters, archives and content distributors:
- Minimum yet comprehensive: Core elements cover essential descriptive and technical needs
- Extensible: Additional attributes can be added for specialized domains
- Interoperable: Designed for exchange between heterogeneous systems
- Technology-neutral: Implementable in XML, RDF, JSON and embedded formats
Core Metadata Groups
EBUCore organizes metadata into logical groups that address different aspects of audiovisual resource description:
Each group is defined with precise semantics and cardinality rules, enabling consistent implementation across systems.
Specialized Extensions
EBUCore is designed to be extended for specific industry needs. The EBU maintains several official extensions:
Technical Implementation
EBUCore is published in multiple serialization formats to support different technical environments:
Industry Applications
EBUCore is deployed across diverse broadcasting and media contexts:
Standards Ecosystem
EBUCore is designed to interoperate with and complement other metadata standards in the media ecosystem:
Operational Implications
For COOs / Operations Leaders
- EBUCore provides a neutral interchange format that reduces vendor lock-in
- Standardized metadata enables automation in content routing and scheduling
- Rights metadata supports compliance and revenue optimization
- Technical metadata enables quality assurance automation
For Metadata / Library Teams
- Well-documented semantics reduce ambiguity in cataloging
- Extensibility allows domain-specific additions without breaking core compliance
- RDF support enables linked data integration and SPARQL queries
- Mapping tools facilitate conversion from legacy systems
For Architects / System Designers
- Multiple serialization formats (XML, RDF, JSON-LD) fit different architectures
- MXF embedding enables metadata persistence through file-based workflows
- Ontology structure supports semantic reasoning and inference
- Open licensing (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0) allows customization and extension
EBUCorePlus: The Next Generation
EBUCorePlus represents the evolution of EBUCore, merging it with the Class Conceptual Data Model (CCDM) into a unified ontology. It provides end-to-end coverage of the media value chain while maintaining backward compatibility with EBUCore implementations.
